Your first MTD tax return: which software can send it

If you signed up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax in 2026, you have probably been thinking about quarterly updates. The tax return at the end of the year is a separate step, and not every product can send it yet. If 2026 to 2027 is your first year under MTD, that return is the first one your MTD software has to send, and GOV.UK says it is due by 31 January 2028.

This page sets out what HMRC’s own software list says about each product we compare: whether it can send the tax return now or only intends to, and whether it can take the savings interest, dividends and other income you may need to add. Products are in alphabetical order, with each one’s cheapest plan.

What GOV.UK says happens after the tax year ends

Your quarterly updates do not replace the tax return. GOV.UK puts it this way: “Once you have made all the adjustments to your self-employment and property income and expenses, you will need to use your software to:”

  • complete your tax return
  • submit your tax return

On timing, GOV.UK says “You must submit your tax return by 31 January following the end of the relevant tax year, but you can submit it earlier.” It gives an example in its own words: “For example, you can submit your 2025 to 2026 tax return at any time from 6 April 2026 to 31 January 2027.” On the same rule, a return for 2026 to 2027 is due by 31 January 2028.

Before you send it, you may need to add income HMRC does not hold. In GOV.UK’s words, “If HMRC does not have all the information about your other income sources, you will need to add them yourself.” The list it gives is:

  • savings interest
  • your share of profit from a partnership as an individual partner
  • dividends (including those from your own company)
  • payrolled benefits in kind that are not subject to Class 1A National Insurance contributions
  • any other income or gains that have not been automatically added

“You must add this information before you submit your tax return.” That is why the tables below show savings interest and dividends next to the tax return: if you have either, your software needs to be able to take it. You can read the rest on GOV.UK’s page on submitting your tax return, and our guide to the end of the MTD year walks through each step.

What HMRC’s list says about sending the tax return

HMRC’s software list marks each feature as “Available” now or “Intended” for later. The answers here are HMRC’s words as the list stood on 30 October 2026, the date of the version we read, and not something we have tested ourselves. The same words for every product on HMRC’s list, not only the ones we compare, are set out together.

HMRC’s own software finder shows anything marked “Intended” as “In development”, and explains it like this: “The software provider has committed to building this in time for the 2026 to 2027 tax return.” The list gives no date for an individual product, though, and a commitment is not the same as the feature being ready. If a product you like is marked “Intended”, it is worth checking with the provider before you rely on it for your return.

“Not stated” in a table means HMRC’s list says nothing about that feature for the product either way.

The cheapest plan is the lowest price the provider lists, with the plan’s name in brackets. Some providers name their cheapest plan as covering quarterly updates only, so the plan that sends your tax return may cost more. Each product’s own page lists all its plans.

Questions about your first MTD tax return

How many of the products Acrenvo compares can send my first MTD tax return?

As HMRC’s list stood on 30 October 2026, it says 36 of the products we compare can send your tax return now, and it marks the tax return as “Intended” for nine more. That means the provider has told HMRC it is committed to building it, but the list does not say it can send a return yet. If a product you like is marked “Intended”, it is worth checking with the provider before you rely on it for your return. “Not stated” in a table means HMRC’s list says nothing about that feature for the product either way.

When is my first MTD tax return due?

A tax return for 2026 to 2027 is due by 31 January 2028, and your quarterly updates do not replace it. On timing, GOV.UK says “You must submit your tax return by 31 January following the end of the relevant tax year, but you can submit it earlier.”

Does HMRC add CIS deductions to my tax return for me?

HMRC adds them when it holds the information, because GOV.UK says that “If HMRC has information about your other income sources, HMRC will add them to your tax return for you.” Among the things it lists is “Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) — subcontractor deductions”. It then says “After HMRC has added this information, you can find it in either your software (when you ask for a calculation) or your HMRC online services account.” It adds: “You must check this information before you submit your tax return.” As HMRC’s list stood on 30 October 2026, it marks 19 of the products we compare as “Available” for the Construction Industry Scheme.

HMRC’s list changes as providers add features, and its software finder shows the current answers. We count how HMRC’s list has changed month by month. GOV.UK’s advice, where a product does not yet do what you need, is to ask: “If you currently use software not listed or have an income source not yet supported, ask your preferred software provider about their plans. More software options will become available over time.”
