HMRC list timeline
When each product first appeared in HMRC's software list data
HMRC's “Find software for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax” service is built from a data file that HMRC publishes in the open, and every change to that file is kept in its history. By reading that history, it is possible to see the day each product first appeared in the file and, for the few that have gone, the last day it was there. This page sets those dates out in one place.
It helps to be clear about what the dates mean. They record when a product appeared in, or left, the public data file, and nothing more. They are not the date HMRC approved, recognised or certified anything, and the file itself does not say why a product was added or removed. If you are choosing software, HMRC's own service remains the place to confirm what is listed today.

How the dates are worked out
Acrenvo reads every version of the file on the main line of HMRC's repository, 101 versions in all, and takes the date each version was committed, in UTC. A product's first date is the first version that contains it, and its last date is the last version that contained it before it left. If a product left and later came back, it keeps its original first date. The first versions of the file in 2022 held placeholder test entries, and those are left out.
Products are matched from one version to the next by the product number HMRC gives them, or by name where no number exists. Only the product name, its number and whether it is marked as available to individuals are copied. Contact details in the file are never copied. The dates are refreshed by hand when Acrenvo re-reads the file, so a very recent change may not appear here yet. Price changes are kept separately on the price changes record.

The data comes from HMRC's income-tax-software-choices-frontend repository, which HMRC publishes under the Apache License 2.0. The figures on this page match the conf/software-vendors.json file at commit 8f43c4038028.
