HMRC’s MTD software list, month by month

HMRC’s software list for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax held 179 products in its commit of 30 October 2026, up from 42 in its commit of 21 November 2025, and 165 of the 179 were open to individuals.

HMRC’s software finder for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax shows the list as it stands today. HMRC builds it from a file it publishes in the open, and every change to that file is kept, so it is possible to look back and see how the list has grown. This page counts the list as it stood at the end of each month since July 2022.

For each month you can see how many products HMRC’s list held, how many were open to individuals, and how many of those the list says can send the tax return or handle the Construction Industry Scheme, other income, a free version and accessibility. Beside each month is the HMRC commit the counts come from and the date of that commit, so anyone can check a figure against HMRC’s own file.

HMRC’s three software lists

HMRC keeps three separate lists of software, one for each kind of return, and a place on one of them says nothing about the other two. If you are checking whether software is on “HMRC's list”, it helps to look at the list for the return you are sending.

  • HMRC's MTD software list

    This page

This is the list for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. HMRC builds its software finder from it and describes the finder like this:

“Use this tool to help you find software that meets your needs for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.”

Our counts come from HMRC’s commit of 30 October 2026, which we read on 1 November 2026.

  • HMRC's Self Assessment software list

This is the list for the yearly Self Assessment return, and HMRC opens it with this sentence:

“Commercial software suppliers can submit one or more elements of the tax return and supplementary pages to HMRC.”

GOV.UK last updated it on 23 October 2026, and we read it on 31 October 2026.

  • HMRC's Corporation Tax software list

This is the list for a company’s tax return, and HMRC explains who is on it like this:

“The commercial software and service suppliers listed in this guidance have given evidence that they’ve developed software or manage a service (or both), that can produce one or more elements of a Company Tax Return.”

GOV.UK last updated it on 12 October 2026, and we read it on 13 October 2026.

The list in November 2026

In HMRC’s commit of 30 October 2026, the latest we have read, the list held 179 products, and 165 of them were open to individuals. Of those, HMRC’s list says 98 are “Available” for the tax return and 50 are “Intended”.

A year earlier, at the end of November 2025, the list held 42 products, with 34 open to individuals and 27 of those “Available” for the tax return.

If you are choosing software for your own first return, the page on your first MTD tax return names the products we compare that HMRC’s list says can send it.

Reading these counts

“Available” and “Intended” are HMRC’s own words. HMRC’s finder shows “Intended” as “In development” and explains it as “The software provider has committed to building this in time for the 2026 to 2027 tax return.” The list gives no date for an individual product, and a commitment is not the same as the feature being ready to use.

The feature counts cover only the products open to individuals. Other income counts a product once if HMRC’s list says it can handle at least one of the other income sources and items HMRC lists, such as employment, dividends or pension income. Accessibility works the same way across HMRC’s four accessibility features. A product is counted as “Intended” for either of these only when nothing in that group is “Available”.

Until September 2025, HMRC’s file listed each feature as a plain label with no “Intended”, so a label that was there counts as “Available” and earlier months have nothing to count as “Intended”. In the file of May 2025, no product carried the label for individuals, which is why that month and the next show none.

Products open to individuals and the tax return

The chart starts in July 2025, the first month in which HMRC’s list said anything about the tax return, while the monthly figures in the next section go back to July 2022.

The newest month comes first. HMRC made no change to the file in 29 of these months, most of them between February 2023 and April 2025. Those months repeat the month before, and the commit column says so.

Products joining and leaving the list

The monthly counts show how big the list was, but not how much changed underneath. We compared each version of HMRC’s file with the one before it, so every change can be dated to the commit that made it. Since July 2022 a product has joined the list 200 times and left it 21 times. HMRC has also renamed a listed product 12 times and changed one of its answers about a feature 1208 times.

The table counts those changes for each of the last 12 months, newest first. Each change, with the product HMRC names and the commit that made it, is in a CSV file of changes to HMRC’s list, in /api/v1/hmrc-list-events.json and in an Atom feed of changes to HMRC’s list, with one item for each HMRC commit.

Questions about HMRC’s MTD software list

What does “Intended” mean on HMRC's MTD software list?

“Intended” is HMRC's own word on its MTD software list. HMRC's finder shows it as “In development” and explains it as “The software provider has committed to building this in time for the 2026 to 2027 tax return.” The list gives no date for an individual product, and a commitment is not the same as the feature being ready to use. The page on your first MTD tax return names the products we compare that HMRC's list says can send the return.

What does “Available” mean on HMRC's MTD software list?

HMRC's finder explains a feature marked this way as “This feature is ready to use now.” The list shows it for each product and each feature, and every product on HMRC's list is set out on its own page with what the list says about it.

How many products are on HMRC's MTD software list?

In HMRC's commit of 30 October 2026, the latest we have read, the list held 179 products, and 165 of them were open to individuals. Of those, HMRC's list says 98 are “Available” for the tax return and 50 are “Intended”. The HMRC list timeline shows when each product first appeared.

Is this the same list as HMRC's Self Assessment software list?

HMRC's MTD software list and its Self Assessment software list are separate lists. This one is for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, and HMRC describes the finder it builds from it like this: “Use this tool to help you find software that meets your needs for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.” The yearly Self Assessment return has its own list, which we set out on HMRC's Self Assessment software list page.

How each month is read

We read every version of the file on the main line of HMRC’s repository, 106 versions in all, and date each one by the day it was committed, in UTC. A month’s counts come from the last version committed in or before that month. HMRC’s file also has a date field of its own, but it stopped moving in September 2025 while the file kept changing, so we never use it.

The first versions in 2022 held placeholder test listings, which are left out, so July and August 2022 count no products. A product HMRC lists more than once is counted once for each listing, as HMRC’s finder shows it. The counts were last read on 1 November 2026, so the latest month covers only the days up to then. When a product first appeared in the list is set out on the HMRC list timeline.

Download the counts

Every row of the table is also in a CSV file of HMRC’s list by month, in the same order, with the commit, its date and a link to HMRC’s file at that commit. The same counts are in the open data API as /api/v1/hmrc-list-monthly.json. Every product on the list today, with what HMRC’s list says about each one, is set out on every product on HMRC’s list.

Every month in the table is also in an Atom feed of HMRC’s list by month, which most feed readers can follow without an email address or account.

Source and licence

The counts come from the conf/software-vendors.json file in HMRC’s income-tax-software-choices-frontend repository, which HMRC publishes under the Apache License 2.0. The latest month matches the file at commit 201b34ec0e01, dated 30 October 2026.

Acrenvo counted these figures from the file’s commit history. HMRC did not prepare this page, and HMRC does not endorse Acrenvo or any product in its list.
