Plan your MTD quarterly update deadlines

When are the MTD quarterly update deadlines?

For the 2026 to 2027 tax year, the four quarterly updates are due by 7 August 2026, 7 November 2026, 7 February 2027 and 7 May 2027, whether your software uses standard or calendar update periods. We took these dates from GOV.UK’s guidance on sending quarterly updates, which we last read on 17 October 2026, and where the dates come from links to it.

Once MTD for Income Tax starts for you, four quarterly updates and a tax return fall due in each tax year. Choose the tax year you start and the kind of update period your software uses, and the planner sets out every deadline for that year and the one after, so you can see the whole of your first two years at once.

The planner opens on the current tax year, with both kinds of period side by side. Your choices stay on this page and are not saved.

10 deadlines for the 2026 to 2027 and 2027 to 2028 tax years, with both kinds of update period side by side.

Add these dates to your calendar

The file is the same for everyone and holds only these dates. Your calendar app adds them as all-day events, and nothing is sent back to us.

Hear about price changes once a month

We’ll email you a link to confirm first. Once you confirm, Acrenvo will send one email a month summarising the MTD software price changes we have checked and any changes to HMRC’s list of software for MTD for Income Tax, with links to the pages on Acrenvo where each change is recorded. Each email may also pick out one dated finding from that month’s record and list the coming MTD for Income Tax deadlines. If nothing changed in a month, we send nothing. In future it may also carry one advert and news of paid guides or templates from Acrenvo, each clearly labelled for what it is. Every email has a stop link, and stopping takes a single click.

This is separate from the deadline reminders, and signing up for one does not sign you up for the other. No account is needed. How we use your email address. Past emails and what each one holds

Standard and calendar update periods

Standard update periods follow the tax year, so your first update covers 6 Apr to 5 Jul 2026. Calendar update periods end on the last day of a month instead, so the same update covers 1 Apr to 30 Jun 2026. The deadline for each update is the same either way, which is why the planner keeps one date per row and only the period changes.

Each update covers everything from the start of the tax year to the end of its period, so the fourth update covers the whole year. The tax return for the 2026 to 2027 tax year is due by 31 January 2028.

GOV.UK says you can send an update before its deadline: “You can send a quarterly update any time after the end of the update period up to and including the day of the update deadline. You can also send an update up to 10 days before the end of the update period if you do not expect to record any further transactions.” It also says that “you cannot change your update periods for the rest of the tax year after you send a quarterly update, so it’s important to check this when you set up your software.”

On penalty points, GOV.UK says: “There are no penalties for missing a quarterly update deadline for the 2026 to 2027 tax year.” That is why those rows show no penalty point. You still need to keep digital records and send quarterly updates before you can submit your tax return. The penalty estimator counts the points for deadlines you think you might miss.

Adding the deadlines to your calendar

Each calendar file holds the deadlines for the tax year you pick and the year after, as all-day events on their due dates. There is one file for each start year and kind of update period, and they are made when the site is built, so the same file goes to everyone and nothing about you is in it or sent to us.

Most calendar apps, including those on phones, open the file and ask whether to add the events. The file does not update itself, so if GOV.UK changes a date we will change the file, and you would need to download it again. The deadlines calendar shows the next deadline for any one tax year.

Where the dates come from

The periods and deadlines come from GOV.UK’s guidance on sending quarterly updates, and the tax year each threshold step starts in comes from its guidance on when you need to use MTD. Each tax year also has its own page of MTD deadlines by tax year, with the threshold for that year and the deadlines in date order.
