Quarterly price report, 2026-Q3
What MTD software cost from July to September 2026
This report sets out what Making Tax Digital for Income Tax software cost during the quarter, using the prices we had checked on each provider’s own pricing page. It covers landlords and sole traders separately, because many products sell different plans to each, and it notes the price changes we recorded and the products that joined or left HMRC’s software list data over the same months.
The figures were frozen on 3 October 2026, shortly after the quarter ended, and they will not change. That means anyone who cites them can expect this page, and its CSV, to say the same thing later.

Starting prices for landlords and sole traders
A product’s paid starting price is the lowest regular monthly price above zero on any plan it sells, leaving out plans priced on request. The median is the price in the middle once every product’s starting price is lined up, so half the products start at or below it. Where an even number of products are counted, it is the mean of the two middle prices, rounded to the nearest penny.
A landlord here means someone with rental income and no trade income, and a sole trader means someone with trade income and no rental income. These are the same starting points the software selector offers. For each group we count only the plans that group can use, so a plan sold only to sole traders is left out of the landlord figures, and products that do not handle self-employment income are left out of the sole-trader figures. That is why the groups can count different numbers of products.
| Group | Cheapest | Median | Products counted |
|---|---|---|---|
| All products | £2.00 | £8.13 | 22 |
| Landlords | £2.00 | £7.50 | 20 |
| Sole traders | £2.00 | £6.50 | 16 |
Some plans charge by the property or the tenancy. For those, the starting price is the plan’s price for the properties it includes, so a larger portfolio pays more and the figure is a lower bound rather than a quote. A cheapest paid plan can also cover only part of what Making Tax Digital needs, such as quarterly updates without the tax return, so these figures sit under the cost of a complete setup rather than measuring it.
How starting prices were spread
The median gives the middle of the market, but it helps to see how many products started in each price range. This counts every product with a paid plan, whichever group it suits.
| Starting price a month | Products |
|---|---|
| Under £5 | 4 |
| £5 to £9.99 | 8 |
| £10 to £14.99 | 5 |
| £15 to £19.99 | 3 |
| £20 or more | 2 |
Price and plan changes recorded in the quarter
Our checks recorded one price change and no plan changes during the quarter.
| Price changes recorded | 1 |

| Plan changes recorded | 0 |
The price changes page keeps every change we have recorded, with the date the old price was last seen and the provider pages that show the new one.
What moved this quarter
For each plan whose price moved during the quarter, we give the price before and after, the last day we saw the old price, the day our check recorded the new one and the provider page we read it on. A provider can change a price at any point between those two days, so the recorded date is when we found the change rather than when it took effect.

How the figures were worked out
Every figure comes from the products we compared when the quarter was frozen on 3 October 2026, with the prices as we had last checked them on each provider’s own site. Prices are regular monthly prices, so a short introductory discount is left out. Where a plan is billed yearly, we use its monthly equivalent, and VAT treatment follows whatever each provider states on its own pricing page.
Free plans are not counted, because these figures describe the cheapest plan you would pay for. Quarters follow the calendar, so this quarter runs from 1 July 2026 to 30 September 2026. The quarterly price summary shows the same overall figures beside the quarter now under way, and the methodology page explains how prices and conditions are handled across the site.
Download the figures
The CSV file for this report holds every figure in the tables and charts on this page, one to a row, each with the quarter and the date the figures were frozen. Money is in pounds with two decimal places. It does not hold the names and dates in the lists of products that joined or left HMRC’s list data, which are on this page only. Each price move, with the date we recorded it and the page we read, is in the price moves CSV. The products, plans and prices behind it are in the open data API.
